Description
Created life-size as a working model for The Crucifixion Scene (12th Station). It was painted life-size because the artist did not know if the 12 foot cross he constructed would hold the weight of a man's body. He therefore painted this study on a lightweight material so that he could nail it to his constructed cross. By so doing he could determine the proportions, in relationship to Christ's body, of the other living models who were re-enacting the crucifixion scene. As it turned out, he was able to stabilize the cross by anchoring it to a buried cement block and thus hold a man's weight.
