Description
Peter Brooke's Mayan Warrior depicts a solemn and dignified military subject. Historically, few Mayan warriors wore helmets because of the scarcity of metal. Rather, they wore elaborate wooden and cloth headdresses that represented the animal spirit or “way” of the warrior. Hair style was also a way in which the warrior could denote his rank in society. Only the elites, such as the warrior captains, sported their long, flowing locks in ponytails.
