Artist Statement

— Quang Ho

Description
The natural fragrance and fragility expressed in the petals of a delicate pink rose are contrasted by the sense of peeling cloves of garlic. Towering over these diminutive objects are a pair of man-made pewter vessels, reminders of human intervention, although depicted in simplicity in form and presence. The work is reminiscent of 17th century Golden Age Dutch and Flemish painting, although in Quang Ho's interpretation, there is more of a consciousness of immediacy, as characterized in his painterly, alla prima approach. The English term for the still life genre is derived from the Dutch word "stilleven."
