"It has been a number of years now that a trip took us to a part of the state we had not visited and painted previously. It was eye opening, not just the vistas but finding a hotel in Murphy where the register had General Ulysses S. Grant's signature. The small original study was no more than a 5" x 7" on wood panel, and can be found in my book, "Small Plein Air Sketches in Oil". This piece is then the enlargement from the original study. I have been contemplating doing one more book, developing the plein air study, and I would hope to include the photo of the location the original study and this enlargement. Looking at the study and this 12" x 16" I am pleased that the enlargement is not a copy of the original sketch. I like them both but the enlargement has a lot more drama. The enlargement has most of the same elements even thought the foreground stones are more prominent, and the small bush on the right was needed to balance the various darks in the tree line in the background."
