"A student of mine grew up in a mountain community, and while visiting the homestead the mother apologized for the big wood pile where wood was being prepared for the winter. She said it was being cleaned up the coming week, and I begged her to leave it for a few days longer so that I could paint it. The freshness, chaos, and color of the split logs were stunning and spoke volumes about living a life in the wilderness."
