"The location is in a small town within the province of Yunnan in South West China. The market is a place of gathering, held every five days, this is where the rural Chinese people have the opportunity to trade their goods, they can barter for anything from farm animals, to produce, clothing, and all types of handmade items. There is something for everyone. And best of all is that this is a great place to people watch. The marketplace is an important social event, an opportunity to spend time with friends and relatives. Many of the people walk for several miles to attend the festival of the market; each dressed in their specific village attire."

"A warm traditional setting of water pitcher and fruit aren't enough to keep the spirits of these two orioles from taking the opportunity to escape when the canvas tears. I enjoy the technical challenge of showing the difference between the two dimensional quality of the bird left behind and the more three dimensional sense of the liberated birds. The painting is of course, as most of my work is, a metaphor for the desire for liberation."

Among the many hundreds of painters that comprise the relatively recent, but illustrious history of California art, the career of Theodore Nikolai Lukits stands out as unique in its variety, complexity, breadth and quality. Lukits was a well‑trained and astute draftsman as well as a brilliant colorist and fastidious craftsman. He ground his own paints, made his own pastels, created customized palettes, crafted his own brushes, and carved and gilded his own frames. By teaching for more than 60 years, he made a lasting contribution to the dissemination of the ideals and techniques of 19th century French ateliers and academies.
