Artist Statement
"In this painting, El Matador, Malibu, CA I set out to honor the quiet monuments of El Matador’s coastal rock formations—structures shaped over millennia by wind, tide, and time, yet alive in every moment with shifting light and atmosphere. Standing before this massive rock, I was struck not only by its physical presence, but by its sense of endurance. Against the restless motion of the Pacific, the rock becomes a witness: to changing weather, passing seasons, and the brief human moments that unfold around it.
My goal was to translate that encounter—its stillness, its strength, and its subtle interplay of color—into paint. I approached the composition with a focus on the warm, sculptural planes of the rock, contrasted against the cool, receding foam that swirls at its base. The scene is both dramatic and intimate and an invitation to pause. To recognize the clarity that comes from standing before something ancient and to reconnect, even briefly, with the forces far larger than ourselves."
