Artist Statement
"As a painter I’m drawn to the rhythmic energy and contrast to the rugged central coast shoreline in Monterey. Light on the Monterey Coast, where an open wide horizon, soft afternoon high clouds and bands of ocean make for one of my favorite subjects.
The foreground cliffs anchor the painting with dark shapes of earth tones and deep violet shadows. The water shapes lend themselves to shapes of brushstrokes creating, for me, a sense of the painting to paint itself.
Rather than focusing on a single dramatic crash or focal point, I sometimes prefer to emphasize a visualize movement in a painting. The continuous movement of water and its rhythms naturally lend themselves to this. The interplay of light across the surface accents scattered highlights, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere adding an extra element to design.
I find myself compelled to paint this subject, where balance between abstraction and natural observation converge with the rhythms of the ocean."
