Artist Statement
“My painting ‘Night Palm’ originated from a week spent visiting the Mission Beach area of San Diego. The date palm is one of the oldest cultivated trees in the world. Considered an ancient symbol for prosperity, an emblem of triumph and victory, also referred to as ‘The Tree of Life.’ They take around five years to bear fruit, but live as long as 100 years. I loved the mood of that evening in Mission Beach, under this big old tree, and the nocturnal illumination. My landscapes tend to be centered on urban architectural forms and manmade environments. But lately, I've felt the need to make room for cultivated nature, a kind of metaphor for rejuvenation and refuge.”
