Artist Statement
“The Matilija Valley just outside of Ojai was struck hard by the torrential rains of 2023. Many houses were destroyed and hikers and non-residence were banned from the area. This painting was created en plein air near the entrance to the canyon in mid-summer when the wild Matilija poppies started to bloom and the valley opened up again. The setting sun refracts its radiant light over the western wall of the valley. Those distant mountains are 5 miles back. Soon I hope to hike back there with my dogs and paint the two spectacular waterfalls that there reside.”
