Artist Statement
“Both paintings, Lake Washington II and Lake Washington III, were part of a group of plein air studies that I painted in a park looking west toward Lake Washington at varying times of the day. My intent with the series was to create a work routine, as I had just moved to the Seattle area and needed to get out and paint regularly. I wanted to go outside to work before the rainy season started, study the drifting clouds in the sky, and work quickly (in contrast to my studio work). I found that painting clouds was not exactly like other kinds of observational painting, and instead of documenting the landscape I began creating a type of fiction inspired by what I saw. But, the clouds changed so fast that I invented something more to my imagination or how I felt.”
