Description
This work represents the artist’s original concept for his much larger version of the painting, titled “The Resurrection,” which measures 96” x 48” and is temporarily installed in the Marian Chapel of Our Savior Church at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. According to the Gospel of John, Mary Magdalene was the first to see the resurrected Christ at early sunrise, however, she did not initially recognize Him. In this painting, Peter Adams proposes the possibility of the contre-jour effect (backlighting) caused by the rising sun that may have illuminated Christ’s head, thus, temporarily blinding Mary Magdalene.
