Description
This intimate plein air watercolor captures a quiet, shaded pool bordered by dense foliage. Latimer’s loose yet controlled brushwork conveys a sense of natural spontaneity, while his layered greens and muted earth tones reveal his deep familiarity with Northern California’s riparian landscapes. The delicate rendering of light across the water’s surface, framed by overhanging trees, reflects his sensitivity to atmospheric effects—a hallmark of his work. The composition evokes the secluded, meditative qualities of a hidden woodland pool, likely painted en plein air at a location Latimer knew well from his many painting excursions in Northern California.
Historical Significance
A central figure in early 20th century West Coast landscape painting, Lorenzo Palmer Latimer was celebrated for his refined approach to watercolor and his dedication to painting directly from nature. Based in San Francisco, he was an influential teacher and mentor, particularly in Nevada, where he founded the Latimer Art Club in Reno in 1921. His works are held in numerous public and private collections and remain sought after by collectors of California Impressionism and early Nevada regional art.
Framing
Framed by Warner Roberts Framing in Palo Alto, California (label on verso). The work is presented in a softly toned speckled wood frame with a gilt inner lip and a sage green archival mat. The framing harmonizes with the painting’s palette and is executed to museum standards, using acid free materials to ensure long term preservation.
Condition
The watercolor is in very good condition, commensurate with age. The paper appears stable, with no visible tears, creases, or water damage. Colors remain fresh and vibrant, showing no signs of fading. There is no apparent foxing or staining within the image area.
