Artist Statement
"Sierras. The Witness — The watchtower at Manzanar, where 10,000 Americans were imprisoned for their ancestry. I painted the tower alone in the midst of desert—no fence, no context. Just the tower, solitary, like Pushkin's Anchar, the poison tree that radiates what it is without explanation. A sentinel of history.
Mood: Uncanny stillness. The turquoise sky too beautiful, the tower too present. Something is wrong in paradise. The mood of encountering history that refuses to recede."
