Artist Statement
“The fragrance of incense; the heat given off by the candles and their sparkling reflections on the holy icons; the solemnity of prayers; and the choir’s joyful sounds create the mood of Easter. The congregation of the Russian Orthodox Church eagerly awaits the announcement that Christ has risen. It is proclaimed by the bishop and the priests, and then by the deacon who circulates clockwise around the nave, swinging the incensor, and repeatedly and loudly acclaims, “Christ has Risen!” Each member of the congregation replies, ‘He has indeed Risen.’ Sweet-smelling smoke and the feeling of warmth and brotherly love permeates the church.”
